The publication of a landmark report, Scotland’s Green Gas Opportunity, commissioned by the Green Gas Taskforce and SGN, marks an important moment for Scotland’s renewable energy debate.
For some time, biomethane has sat slightly outside the centre of the net zero conversation. Wind, solar, electrification and hydrogen have often taken the larger share of attention. Yet the report makes a compelling case that biomethane deserves a more serious place in Scotland’s future energy mix.
Its analysis suggests Scotland has the potential to generate 19TWh of biomethane by 2050, equivalent to around half of Scotland’s current economy-wide gas demand. It also estimates that a fully scaled green gas sector could contribute £10bn in gross value added and support 8,000 jobs by 2050.
These are significant figures. But they should be treated carefully.
The £10bn figure is not a description of what is already being delivered. It is a measure of what could be unlocked if Scotland creates the right conditions for biomethane to scale. That distinction matters, because the next stage of the conversation cannot simply be about potential. It has to be about delivery.
Potential and progress
There are already biomethane plants operating across the country. There are food and drink businesses looking for more responsible ways to manage unavoidable organic by-products. There are local authorities collecting household food waste. There are farmers using biofertiliser to reduce reliance on artificial fertilisers. There are schools, colleges and young people beginning to understand the skills and infrastructure behind the circular economy.
These are not just theoretical building blocks; they are already part of Scotland’s renewable energy system.

This is what gives the SGN and Green Gas Taskforce report its real significance. It does not describe a speculative future technology waiting to be invented. It describes an existing sector that needs to be scaled with greater confidence, coordination and policy support.
Waste stream to resource strategy
Scotland’s food and drink sector is one of the country’s defining industries. Its farming sector underpins rural economies and food security. Its gas network continues to supply heat and energy to homes, businesses and critical services. Biomethane sits at the intersection of all three.
Organic material from food production and household food waste can be converted into renewable gas, electricity, low-carbon fuel and nutrient-rich biofertiliser. In doing so, biomethane links the food system, the energy system and the agricultural system in a way few other renewable technologies can.
But this is where the conversation needs to mature. The value of anaerobic digestion is often explained in simple terms: food waste goes in and renewable energy comes out. That is true, but it undersells the wider opportunity. At scale, biomethane can support energy security, reduce reliance on imported gas, create rural employment, support lower-carbon transport and return nutrients to land.
In other words, biomethane is not just a way to manage waste. It is infrastructure for a more resilient economy.
A green generation
Through Bio Capital’s partnership with Perth High School, students have been able to see anaerobic digestion in action at Earnside Energy. That kind of experience matters. If Scotland is serious about building a green gas sector capable of supporting thousands of jobs, young people need to see the real plants, processes and careers of the green industry.
The policy question
The Scotland’s Green Gas Opportunity report is clear that Scotland’s biomethane opportunity will not be realised by market momentum alone.
It calls for stronger policy recognition, a national biomethane target, a post-2030 support framework, clearer treatment of biomethane within emissions trading, a functional market for greenhouse gas removals and proper recognition of digestate as a fertiliser replacement.
Those asks reflect a wider issue, that the sector does not need to prove that anaerobic digestion works, it just needs long-term trust.
Investors need confidence to develop and upgrade infrastructure. Businesses and local authorities need confidence that food waste treatment capacity will be reliable and can support their sustainability and compliance requirements. Farmers need confidence that biofertiliser and feedstock partnerships can form part of stable, long-term agricultural planning.
Without that confidence, Scotland risks leaving value in the system unused.
Moving from isolated examples to national infrastructure
The opportunity now is to stop seeing biomethane as a collection of individual projects and start treating it as part of Scotland’s national infrastructure.
That means recognising the role it can play in the energy mix alongside electrification. It means connecting waste policy, farming policy, industrial strategy and energy policy more effectively. It means supporting the regional infrastructure that allows organic resources to be collected, processed and returned to productive use.
The report’s £10bn figure is useful because it gives scale to the prize. But the more important question is how Scotland gets there.
From Bio Capital’s perspective, the foundations are visible. Scottish food businesses are already participating. Councils are already collecting. Farmers are already using biofertiliser. AD plants are already producing renewable energy. Schools are already introducing young people to the technology and skills behind the sector.
The next step is to scale the parts of it that are already working. If Scotland can do that, biomethane can move from being an underused renewable resource to a serious contributor to energy security, rural growth and net zero delivery.
The opportunity has been quantified, now it needs to be built.
