New Food Waste Partnership with North Yorkshire Council

  • Two-year contract has been awarded to Bio Capital from North Yorkshire Council to deliver a dedicated non-household food waste collection service.
  • Collected food waste will be transformed into renewable energy at Bio Capital’s local Emerald Biogas facility.
  • Food waste will be collected using environmentally friendly CNG vehicles, further reducing the carbon footprint of the waste collection process.

We are pleased to announce that we’ve been awarded a new two-year contract by North Yorkshire Council to deliver a dedicated waste collection service for the authority’s commercial customers. The contract will run until March 2027.

The partnership marks another step forward in our mission to support local authorities in meeting their sustainability goals through innovative, low-carbon waste solutions.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bio Capital will provide food waste collection services for businesses across North Yorkshire, using our own fleet of environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. This approach helps to support the council’s sustainability goals by significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the waste collection process.

The collected food waste will then be transported to our Emerald Biogas anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, where it will be transformed into renewable energy and go on to power regional homes and businesses.

The site plays a key role in our circular economy model – converting food waste into renewable electricity and gas as well as biofertiliser that goes back on to the land to support sustainable farming.

George O’Malley, Chief Operations Officer at Bio Capital, commented:“Our partnership with North Yorkshire Council is a fantastic example of how local authorities and green infrastructure providers can work together to deliver real-world fully circular environmental benefits.

“By using our CNG-powered fleet and processing food waste at our Emerald Biogas facility, we’re not just collecting waste but are transforming it into renewable energy and helping to build a more sustainable future for the region.”

Cllr Richard Foster, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for managing our environment, added: “We are very pleased to be partnering with Bio Capital to deliver this new food waste collection service for our commercial customers.

“It is an example of our commitment to continuously improve our offer to businesses and supports our ambition to lead by example when it comes to securing a sustainable future for the region. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have across the county.”
