Bio Capital welcomes Ofgem, ADBA and DESNZ leaders to East London Biogas

Bio Capital is proud to have welcomed senior leaders from Ofgem, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to our East London Biogas site in Dagenham on Thursday 13th August.

The visit brought together industry, government and regulators to see anaerobic digestion in action at our state-of-the-art site and discuss the future growth of the UK’s biogas and biomethane sector.

East London Biogas was the first anaerobic digestion facility to be built inside the M25. With more household food waste created annually in London than in Northern Ireland and Scotland combined, the plant provides a vital environmental service to the local community. The 4.7-acre site processes up to 70,000 tonnes of food waste each year, with an electricity generation capacity of 3.56 Mwe.

Food waste collected from households and businesses across London and Essex is transformed at the site into renewable energy and PAS 110 accredited biofertiliser for local farmers, with a biofertilsier production capacity of 75,000 Tonnes.

Compared to landfill, the site reduces emissions by over 40,000 Tonnes CO2e annually.

During the visit, Bio Capital’s team showed guests around the plant and discussed the role anaerobic digestion can play in supporting the UK’s future energy system, alongside the regulatory and market conditions needed to support continued growth across the sector.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of collaboration between industry, government and regulators as the biogas and biomethane sector continues to develop.

David McKee, Chief Executive of Bio Capital, said:

“We’re proud to have hosted leaders from Ofgem, ADBA and DESNZ at Bio Capital’s East London Biogas site, to show them first-hand the operating plant and discuss the future growth of anaerobic digestion and biogas in the UK.

“Visits like this provide an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration between industry, government and regulators. As the sector continues to grow, our collective responsibility is to ensure that growth is sustainable, innovative and underpinned by the highest standards.

“At Bio Capital, we are committed to investing in technical innovation and operational excellence, helping to drive industry best practice while demonstrating the increasingly important role anaerobic digestion will play in the UK’s future energy system and the delivery of Net Zero.”

Chris Huhne, Chair of ADBA, said:

“Anaerobic digestion is one of the fastest and lowest cost ways to cut emissions, and it does three jobs at once by dealing with food waste, generating green energy and returning nutrients to the soil.

“We were pleased to welcome Ofgem’s leadership to East London Biogas to see that in action, and to set out what the industry needs from regulators and policy makers to grow.”

The visit was organised by ADBA as part of wider engagement around the growth of the UK’s anaerobic digestion and green gas sector.
